Surya Pongal, the second day of Pongal, is celebrated to honor and dedicate the Sun God. Surya Pongal is also the first day of the Tamil Month Thai. On this day, granaries are full, the sun shines brightly, and trees are blooming, and people in Tamil Nadu and other regions of south India.
Women wake early on this day to create Kolam in the front of their doorway and home. Kolam is created with colored rice flour and is placed on the ground carefully by using one hand. Women usually take several hours to prepare kolam. On this day new rice is collected and is cooked in pots. People wait to wait for it to overflow, which is done to celebrate Pongal. The overflowing represents the joyous occasion. Children and adults gather around it as it overflows, waiting to shout “Pongal-o-Pongal!”
