Trailanga Swami, who is also known as Telang Swami or Tailang Swami, was a Hindu yogi and mystic famed for his spiritual journey. He was also called as Swami Ganapati Saraswati. He is a legendary figure in Varanasi and Bengal, with stories being told about his powers and long age. Telang Swami was reportedly born on 1607 and died on 1887. Those numbers suggest he lived for 280 years. He lived in Varanasi between 1737 and 1887, and is considered by many as an incarnation of Shiva.
He was born in Kumbilapuram, which is now known as Kumily of Puspatirega Tehsil at Vizianagaram District in Andhra Pradesh. The birthdate of Trailanga Swami is still being fought upon, with one disciple biographer saying he was born in 1529 and another saying he was born in 1607.
The parents of Trailanga Swami were Vidyavati Devi and Narashingha Rao, who were devotees of Lord Shiva. After the death of his father in 1647, he gave up wealth and the responsibilities of his family to Sridhar, his half-brother.
The teachings of Tailang Swami are still extant and are available in a biography that was written by Umacharan Mukhopadhyay, one of his disciples. Umacharan described the bondage of Tailang Swami as an attachment to the world and liberation as a renunciation of the world and absorption in god. Umacharan said after attaining the state of desirelessness, the world becomes heaven and one can be freed from samsara, the cycle of birth and death.
According to the funeral customs of the monks of the Dashanami sect, Tailang Swami died on the evening of December 26, 1887, which falls on a Monday. The dead body of Swami was given salisamadhi in the Ganges.
