Toilet: Ek Prem Katha Story:
The film is a satirical comedy in support of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, a governmental campaign to improve the sanitation conditions, with an emphasis on the eradication of open defecation, especially in rural areas.
The movie is about a woman who leaves her husband on the first day of their marriage after discovering that he doesn’t have a toilet. He desperately sets out on a mission to win back his love by standing up to the age-old traditions and values of India.
Toilet Ek Prem Katha begins when a ‘maanglik’ guy is married to a buffalo to get his stars in the right position. Then, Keshav (Akshay Kumar) meets a college topper Jaya (Bhumi Pednekar) and falls in love. Keshav’s life seems to be on the right path as he gets married to Jaya but Jaya’s life turns upside down when she discovers that Keshav’s house has no toilet. And he can’t build one because of the prevalent religious beliefs. A lot depends on his father, played by an excellent Sudhir Pandey, who refuses to budge from his stand to not have a toilet in his home. This prompts Keshav to rebel against the society but he is willing to go all the way for his love for Jaya.
The movie is a satirical take on a battle against the age old tradition of open defecation in the country. From the panchayat to the sanitation department, from the role of the government to the superstitions of the villagers, from scams to the ethos, from first love to a matured romance, TEPK is Keshav’s journey where a common man stands up for a cause and eventually changes the mindsets.
Toilet – Ek Prem Katha Review & Rating:
It is a true event in which 19-year old Priyanka Bharti fled her husband’s home in 2012, when there was no toilet. The movie portrays all the characters in a good role. The characterization is good while the story impresses everyone. The direction and music are pretty good.
Bhumi Pednekar aces it as a homely, yet feisty, new bride while Akshay Kumar tries to present the issue in all its complexity. The presence of veterans, Pandey and Kher, is unmissable. However, some people may not like the film, as it shows the truth.
Allindiaroundup Rating: 4/5
Final Verdict:
Overall, it is a good entertainer with a social message. If you are looking for a well-scripted film backed by power-packed performances by the actors, do not miss this film.
