Mumbai Laborer Dies After Being Brutally Beaten Up By Police For Violating Coronavirus Lockdown
Mumbai, India: A laborer from Dongri area of Mumbai died after returning to his house on the evening of Saturday after he was brutally beaten up by the police in the area for violating the lockdown rules of the country.
According to the friend of the laborer, the man was beaten by the police on the evening of April 18, 2020.
The police of the area said that Sagir Jamil Khan, the laborer, died due to a heart problem.
They also denied the allegations that are being placed against them.
The JJG Marg Police Department has registered an accidental death report for the matter.
The roommate claimed that Jami Khan told him that he was driving a handcart to deliver a refrigerator in the Null Bazar area when a police officer at Phoolwali Galli in Dongri beat him.
Before passing away, Khan told his roommate that he was hit on the back, hands, and head.
While having dinner, Khan collapsed and was rushed to a hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Sangramsingh Nishandar, the Deputy Commissioner of Police Zone 1, said that the medical report of Khan showed that the cause of his death was heart enlargement.
The medical report said there was no external or internal injury on the body of the laborer.
In a statement that he released, the DCP said:
“The CCTV footage of the street shows him passing by at quite a distance from the spot where there was police nakabandi. The allegations against police are false and baseless.”
The police said an autopsy will be done to know the exact cause of his death.
His dead body will be handed over to his relatives for the last rites.
