2-Year-Old Girl Dies After Being Crushed By An Ice Sculpture At Christmas Market In Luxembourg
A 2-year-old girl was crushed to death by an ice sculpture after it collapsed in a Christmas Market in Luxembourg.
Reports suggest that the 2-year-old girl was struck by a piece of falling ice that came from a sculpture.
The incident reportedly happened at the Place Guillaume II market at 8 pm on November 24, 2019.
People who saw the incident said the statue was near an ice rink when it collapsed on the 2-year-old girl.
The paramedics were called in and the 2-year-old girl was rushed to a hospital.
A day after the incident, the police confirmed that the 2-year-old girl died when the ambulance was on the way to the hospital.
In a statement that was released by the police, it stated, “According to initial evidence, an ice sculpture collapsed and a block of ice, unfortunately, hit a young child.”
The statement added, “The child was severely injured and died in the ambulance.”
The people who saw the incident said the girl’s family were distraught and were left in tears.
The family of the 2-year-old girl is now receiving care from a local psychological support group.
Local news agencies said that the Christmas markets were evacuated after the tragic incident.
A forensic investigation was launched at the scene after the incident.
The local police and investigators are now looking into the case and are asking people who saw the incident come forward.
The cause of the ice sculpture collapsing is not known.
The Luxembourg Public Prosecutor’s Office released a statement about the investigation and said that they are conducting an investigation as one into involuntary manslaughter.
Christmas events in the city have been canceled to show respect and solemnity to the family of the victim.
Xavier Bettel, the President of Luxembourg, tweeted about the incident.
President Bettel said, “I am shocked and distressed after the deadly incident yesterday at the Christmas Market where a small child lost her life.”
The tweet added, “It is not a matter of regret how sad this makes us. My deepest compassion and compassion for the family. XB.”
Carlos Veneno was present at the scene when the incident happened.
During an interview with the local press, Carlos said a child fell down and heard screams in the area.
He saw the victim on the ground nearly 1 or 2 meters away from the rink that fell down.
The police responded to the scene in less than 5 minutes.
Carlos said, “It was very fast, relief also arrived and gave first aid to the child.”
