5-Year-Old Boy With Autism Is Being Investigated By School For “Sexual Activities” After Hugging Classmate
A 5-year-old boy from Tennessee who has autism is currently being investigated by his school for “sexual activities” after he hugged a classmate.
According to the parents of the 5-year-old boy, the Staff of the East Ridge Elementary in Tennessee said that Nathan, the 5-year-old boy, had been “overstepping boundaries” and that his teachers had talked with him for a number of times.
According to the family of Nathan, the school has filed a report with the state over the incident.
The East Ridge Elementary has not yet confirmed the claims of the parents of Nathan.
Summery Punam, the guardian of Nathan, said, “I was sick to my stomach. The teacher called me, and she said, ‘You need to have a talk with Nathan about boundaries.’”
Summery tried to explain to the staff that Nathan had autism and has a hard time understanding social cues.
During her interview with WJLA, a local news agency in Tennessee, Summery said, “If you don’t understand how autism works, you’ll think he’s acting out or being difficult. But, that’s not the situation.”
The teacher of Nathan said that the kid kissed a kid on the cheek and hugged a classmate.
The teacher reportedly told the guardian of Nathan that the kid had been overstepping the boundaries.
The spokesperson of the Hamilton County Department of Education, Tim Hensley, released a statement about the incident, in which he said, “School personnel are required to raise concerns regarding children to the Department of Child Services (DCS). It’s up to DCS to determine if those reports are acted on by DCS and what form those actions may take.”
But the family of Nathan believes the school has made the wrong call.
Putnam, the guardian, said Nathan doesn’t even know he did something wrong.
Nathan was moved to a different classroom with new teachers after the incident happened.
Nathan has also been enrolled in “special education services.”
Debi Amick, the grandmother of 5-year-old Nathan, said, “What do you do when a five-year child is being labeled a sexual predator and accused of sexual harassment by the school system? This child is autistic, he comprehends and functions very different than your typical five-year. What do you do?”
She added, “Who do you turn to for help when the school will not even listen to the child’s doctor when he explains the child’s difficulties in his comprehension of simple things such as boundaries. If anyone can offer advice or help please do.”
Debi also said Nathan is a child and doesn’t even know the real meaning of sex.
