After Sonu Nigam, it is actress and singer Suchitra Krishnamoorthi who has taken a stand against ‘Azaan on loudspeakers’ recently. We all know how Sonu Nigan’s Azaan controversy had created a ripple on social media for making some eccentric statements on the ‘Azaan-Muslim call for prayer’.
Similarly, the female singer blatantly tweeted about how the Azaan being played on the loudspeakers offended her early in the morning joining the Sonu Nigam‘s fight against ‘forced religiousness’.
She reminded that loudspeakers are not needed to remind anyone of his/her god. Labeling it “ear-shattering”, and using the word “imposed religiousity”, Suchitra’s tweet created quite a stir on social media and sparked off the debate all over again.
It all started with Sagarika Ghose’s tweet:
came home at 4.45 am 2 most aggressive/ ear shattering call of azaan. Nothing more lowlife & dumb than such extreme imposed religiousity
— Suchitra (@suchitrak) July 23, 2017
The practice isn’t “civilised,” she wrote in another tweet.
nobody objects to azaan or prayers during decent hours. But to be wakung up entire neighbourhood at 5 am is not civilized https://t.co/PBT94NtuGN

However, her tweets did not go well with many of the people and same fate has turned out with Suchitra Krishnamoorthy just like Sonu Nigam who in turn faced some dire consequences like getting bald after a Fatwa issued against him and quitting Twitter.
Similarly, Suchitra Krishnamoorthi had received severe backlash from the Twitter users. Even the Samajwadi Party Leaders bashed her for the meaningless protest on Azaan, they literally mocked the former singer saying her sleep is more important than the call to prayers.
But things took an ugly turn when religious fanatics/trolls who in the name of freedom of speech went ahead to the extent of abusing her and slut-shamed her for voicing her opinion.
It began with this…
came home at 4:45 partying?

But it got ugly real soon.

Sadly even women jumped the gun!
Those sleeping after a day’s tiring work or had sex the previous night are put to great inconvenience.

Taking a stand on this shameful trolls, Suchitra also dropped the drape on hate-mongers who hounded her with the filthiest of language.
Look at these perverts! Feel sorry for my India -with this kind of attitude towards women its no wonder we’ve become rape capital of d world pic.twitter.com/Hteg0IXRM8

Suchitra then did the right thing and drew the attention of Mumbai police after shaming the trolls.
@MumbaiPolice @CPMumbaiPolice @TwitterIndia @Twitter Can you please advise how action can be taken against such violent sexual trolling? https://t.co/i9KQSj2gbf
— Suchitra (@suchitrak) July 26, 2017
Even husband Shekhar Kapur also expressed his dissent and shared Suchitra’s sentiment in nabbing the offenders. He even alerted Twitter.
Trolling arguments is acceptable. But if @Twitter want to survive in India they have to stop such rampant disgusting sexual abuse @suchitrak https://t.co/pNEA0zq5SK
— Shekhar Kapur (@shekharkapur) July 26, 2017
In no time Mumbai Police reverted saying,
1/2 Hello Ms Suchitra. We have already forwarded this to the cyber police station.
— Mumbai Police (@MumbaiPolice) July 26, 2017
Deeply hurt and emotionally offended with the brutal comments that she received from random people on Twitter, she went on to complain about the matter to the police and lodged a police complaint, after which four people have been booked apparently.
“Based on her complaint, police registered a case under IPC sections 509 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) and 67 (a) (punishment for publishing or transmitting of material containing sexually explicit act), against four persons,” a TOI report quoted a senior police official as saying.
The good news is the accounts of offenders have been suspended.
It’s very shameful that people have become so wild on social media sites these days that they think, in the name of freedom of speech they have the authority to tell you how to live your life, and slut shaming for that too!
