From today, linking Aadhaar Number with the Permanent Account Number (PAN) will be mandatory. In between the whole panic of GST, this linking became big fear to the people created by the media. As Goods and Service Tax (GST) is being implemented from today i.e. July 1, 2017, the Indian government took the step of linking Aadhaar with PAN.
This is the wake of the Indian government making it clear that Aadhaar will be a ‘must’ for filing IT returns and obtaining a new PAN from July 1.
But the whole matter of PAN & Aadhar has been ill reported and the headlines by some media houses have scared the people. There had been loads of queries and doubts raised on the issue of Aadhaar – PAN linking.
This misconception by the media created panic among people and hence the immediate traffic load on government servers decreased its efficiency. And the technical errors users got in the process made them scared even more.
What To Do Now?
The World isn’t going to end on 1st July if you somehow couldn’t make it. After July 1, the linking will become a mandatory and the government may declare a date after which the PAN not linked to Aadhaar will become invalid.
The government has not declared the date yet. For sure, everyone’s Aadhaar must be linked with their PAN. There is no doubt that it’s really important to link your PAN with Aadhar by 1st July but it’s surely not the deadline.
The tax department has stated that in no case any PAN will be invalidated. But since the linking is mandatory from July 1, you will need to quote Aadhaar number in the application form for allotment of a new permanent account number and in the return of income.
According to the reports, a senior Income Tax Department official clarified that “people who are not able to link their Aadhaar and Permanent Account Number (PAN) by July 1, will have the option to mention the UIDAI-provided number in the e-ITR and this will be considered a valid linking of the two unique numbers.”
