Veena Malik Sentenced to 26 Years in Jail For Blasphemy in Pak
Pakistani actress, TV host and model who appears in Lollywood and Bollywood films Veena Malik has been sentenced to 26 years jail along with her husband and owner of Pakistan’s biggest media group, Geo TV for blasphemy in Pakistan. Veena Malik who has made her debut in 2000 with Sajjad Gul’s Tere Pyar Mein has been reported alleged that she was a part of blasphemy in Pakistan along with Geo TV. Veena Malik and husband have been facing allegations that they aired a blasphemous programme in Geo TV channel. The owner of Pakistan’s biggest media group, Geo TV and Jang group, was accused of allowing the airing of a blasphemous programme by Geo television in May, which played a religious song while staging a mock marriage of Malik with Bashir. The Judge also sentenced both Malik and Bashir along with TV host Shaista Wahidi for 26 years each.

As far as the allegations Geo and Jang group aired blasphemous programme this played a religious song while staging a mock marriage of Malik with Bashir. Mir Shakil-ur-Rahman, owner of Geo and Jang group were accused of allowing the airing of a blasphemous programme by Geo television in May. The morning programme, which was aired to celebrate the wedding of Pakistani film and TV actress Veena Malik had generated criticism across Pakistan, and people registered blasphemy cases against them across Pakistani cities, including Karachi and Islamabad.

Gilgit ATC Court Announces 26 years Life Sentence
Anti-Terrorism Court Judge Shahbaz Khan sentenced both Malik and Bashir along with TV host Shaista Wahidi for 26 years each and also imposed a 1.3 million Pakistani rupees fine on the convicts and ordered that their properties should be sold to raise the fine, if they failed to pay it. The judge said in his judgment that all four accused committed profanity. The court said in its 40-page verdict also asked the police to arrest the convicts, an official said.
While the channel and all accused apologized through English and Urdu newspapers and TV, it wasn’t enough. The convicts Veena Malik, Bashir and media group Geo TV has the choice of appealing in the regional high court in Gilgit-Baltistan to avoid the jail term and get the justice if they are innocent and aren’t the same persons as they were alleged to be punished. There are reports that all four are out of Pakistan. Rahman resides in the UAE and the other three also went abroad after receiving threats by militant organisations.

Uncertainty of Arrest
It is not known when the arrests would be carried out. Both Wahidi and the Geo group have tendered apology after the allegations were levelled, but the extremists in the country refused to accept it. The blasphemy case was registered on May 26 in a police station in Gilgit by a hardline sunni cleric Himayatullah Khan, deputy chief of the anti-shia organisation Ahl-e-Sunnat Wal Jamaat (ASWJ) formerly known as Sipah-e-Sahaba. Other blasphemy cases were also registered against them in various cities, including Karachi and Islamabad.
