For the first time in thirty-five years, a zookeeper and an elephant that he used to look after gets reunited.
After more than 3 decades of being separated, Zookeeper Peter Adams and Kirsty the elephant were reunited at the Neunkirchen Zoo.
A video showed the emotional reunion of the 2, you could see Kirsty instantly recognizing the zookeeper who used to look after her and even embraced him with her trunk while he was talking to her.
Peter Adams was the zookeeper at the Calderpark Zoo in the 1980s, he used to look after Kirsty. But unfortunately, the zoo had to be closed in August 2003 after it failed to pay the debt of £3 million.
Kirsty was moved to the Chester Zoo in 1987 at Glasgow, Kirsty met her female companion in the zoo for the first time.
Judy, the female companion of Kirsty, were both moved to Dublin in 1994, the two pals lived there until 2005.
After that, they were shipped to the Neunkirchen Zoo in Germany.
Peter said that he lost track of Kirsty when she left Glasgow, he added that he found out about her living in Germany after surfing the internet.
When Peter was asked if he ever wondered where Kirsty was, he said, “Of course, I was wondering if there was any truth to the phrase ‘elephants never forget’.”
Peter Adams managed to arrange a reunion with the bosses of the Neunkirchen Zoo, he then went to Germany to meet Kirsty after 35 years.
A spokesperson of the Zoo said, “Kirsty recognized Peter Adams, who outwardly has changed very much, by his voice.”
A picture shows Peter Adams giving Kirsty a hug as he gets emotional after seeing her, they were apart for thirty-five years.
Peter said, “That she allowed me to get close and accepted me was a very emotional experience for me. I will always keep that memory in my heart.”
Even at the age of 52-years-old, Kirsty, the elephant, is in good health and his enjoying her retirement at the Neunkirchen Zoo.
Peter Adams said that he plans to visit Kirsty in the near future as he now knows where Kirsty lives.
