She now garnered amusing scores for the Indian team at the critical times, in three consecutive matches, she managed to get 60, 171, and 51 runs for India. Undoubtedly, her record-breaking knock of 171* runs of just 115 balls against the defending champion Aussies in the semis scripted Indian Team’s road to their second ICC Women’s World Cup final.
Recently, in an interview, Harmanpreet Kaur revealed that she played the entire tournament with a finger injury which she sustained during the second match of the league stage. She disclosed that the physio advised the smashing batter to rest after being hit by a ball while batting against West Indies.
The medical staff put on a clamp on her fingers to keep her finger straight.
“I played nearly the entire tournament with a finger injury, which I suffered during our second league match against the Windies. I sustained the injury while fielding. The physio advised me rest, but I went back and managed to take two wickets. Thankfully, I didn’t have to bat in that game,” Harmanpreet told.
“I wore the batting gloves on it. It was painful, but I was determined to go beyond the pain barrier and perform for my country. At one point, it looked I might have to return home from the World Cup. I would like to give credit to our physio Tracy Fernandes for helping me play the full tournament,” Harmanpreet added.
Her condition became worse when she suffered a shoulder injury during a practice session before the final. But she once again braved the injury to represent the country and nearly took India over the line in the finals at the Lord’s. A tear in her shoulder was seen in the MRI scan and as a result, Harmanpreet has been ruled out of the upcoming Women’s Super League.
“For a right-handed batter, power comes through one’s right hand, while the left hand gives the ball direction. The finger injury meant it was difficult for her to grip the bat with strength. The tear in her (Harmanpreet’s) left shoulder after the semi final meant she was literally batting with one hand.”
Despite not scoring big in the beginning matches of the tournament, she managed to get 60, 171, and 51 runs for India at the end of the tournament. In the final, she scored 51 with the help of three fours and two sixes, unfortunately, India lost the match by nine runs.
