After a dominating performance in the 3-match Test series against Sri Lanka, team India began its ODI campaign with a convincing nine-wicket triumph over the hosts in the first ODI at Dambulla. While the five-match ODI series gave young Indian players a chance to prove their mettle, it also brought our war-horse MS Dhoni to the battle field.
Virat Kohli didn’t mind making way for his predecessor as he walked into the nets to bat ahead of the opener. The friendship between India’s former-captain MS Dhoni and current captain Virat Kohli share is a well-renowned fact by now. The two have played together for a while now and have witnessed all the highs and lows of their journey.
Nine years ago in Dambulla, young Kohli was given a break in the ODI side following the U-19 World Cup triumph. We all know that MS Dhoni is a person who gives young promising talents opportunity at the highest level. Even though his records spoke volume of his ability at the junior level, it required a lot of guts to give a teenager the opening slot to bat against Sri Lanka in ODI at their own backyard.
Kohli was always intended to do great things but the break provided Dhoni in 2008 will be one of the greatest decisions of him in years to come. Now, coming to 2017, life came back to a full circle nine years hence and tables have turned. Dhoni stepped back himself as the captain and Virat is leading the team in all formats of the game.
It all began for the greatest captain of all time in one of the power net sessions. Virat hit three consecutive sixes of three balls. As soon as Dhoni walked in, the skipper welcomed the veteran in nets by waving his own bat in the air like a helicopter blade.
The helicopter gesture probably was made in reference to Dhoni’s famous ‘helicopter shot’, with the captain making everyone aware to be prepared for watching Mahi unleash his trademark hits. The video of the incident was uploaded by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on its official Twitter handle.
