Sharon and Jack Charping, the owners of the dog, are currently facing second-degree manslaughter charges.

Jennifer Geiling lived in the home where the dog mauled the toddler to death, is currently facing reckless homicide charges.

None of the three people are currently in jail.

During the court hearing on Monday, Sharon, Jack, and Jennifer entered the not-guilty pleas.

Jack and Sharon, the owner of the dog, have agreed to have the dog euthanized after the judge gave them the option to do so.

Kristi Gray, a prosecutor in the court, said, “Normally, Metro Animal Services would go through proceedings in district court to potentially have a dog euthanized, but since they had no objection, Metro Animal Services will go ahead and do that.”

It is still not clear what caused the dog to attack the 2-year-old boy.

But, Melaney Spencer, a dog trainer, said that it is easy to avoid situations like these.

Melaney said, “Intervening before it gets to a point where it’s dangerous.”

She added, “You can usually identify a dog that’s going to be dangerous way, way before you have a terrible incident.”

Melaney explained that it is really important to have behavior training for your dogs at an early age and it is also important to pay attention to things that trigger your animals.

Melaney also said that it is important for dog owners to keep a close eye on kids while they play with dogs.

She added, “They need boundaries, they need guidelines, and that’s what’s going to set them up for the future.”

Sharon, Jack, and Jennifer are expected to appear in a court in August for a pre-trial conference.

The unfortunate incident happened on May 2.

Officers were called after someone reported that a child was bitten by a dog. The police reportedly performed CPR on Isaiah, the 2-year-old boy, and was rushed to the Norton Children’s Hospital.

He passed away as a result of his injuries.

Shelby Chadwell, a neighbor who rushed to the scene, said, “It was a ferocious dog and we had to get the dog out of the room. So my cousin used sticks and bashed them together and scared the dog away. And we put the dresser in the hallway to block the dog off and get out of there.”

Shelby explained what she saw when she entered the house.

She said, “He was barely breathing on the floor, a lot of blood, face down,” he said. “It was the worst. It’s not something I want to relive.”

During an interview with WDRB, a neighbor said that the dog was really aggressive and had often jumped his fence to try to get into the yards of the neighbors.
