Sea Turtle In Thailand Found Dead With Stomach Full Of Plastic Materials

A sea turtle was found dead with a stomach that was full of plastic materials on Somprasong Beach in Chonburi, Eastern Thailand.

Locals found the dead turtle lying dead on the beach.

Kirin Sornpipatcharoen, a veterinary, said that the turtle was 5-years-old.

Kirin also examined the 5-year-old dead turtle. After the examination, the veterinarian found plastic bags and food wrappers in its belly.

Kirin said, “The turtle’s stomach was full of plastic garbage. Most of the pieces looked like the tentacles of jellyfish, which might have confused the turtle into believing that they were food. We’re sure that the plastic in the stomach contributed to or caused the tragic death of the turtle.”

This is not the first time that an animal was found dead due to the consumption of plastic materials.

Earlier, a dead whale was found in the Philippines.

An autopsy that was carried out by marine biologist Darrell Blatchley found out that the whale had over 40 kilograms of plastic in its stomach.

The Cuvier Beaked Whale washed up ashore in the Compostela Valley.

The autopsy revealed that the whale died due to dehydration and starvation after swallowing too much plastic materials.

During an interview, marine biologist Darrell Blatchley said, “I was not prepared for the amount of plastic. Forty kilos roughly of rice sacks, grocery bags, banana plantation bags, and general plastic bags. Sixteen rice sacks in total. It was so big; the plastic was beginning calcification.”

Images were also shared by Darrel.

The images show plastic that was removed out of the stomach of the Cuvier Beaked Whale.

Blatchley said that he has never seen this amount of plastic in one animal before.

He added, “In the last 10 years we have recovered 61 whales and dolphins, of which 57 have died due to fishing nets, dynamite fishing, and plastic garbage. Four were pregnant. This cannot continue. The Philippines needs to change from the children up or nothing will be left.”

Plastic is often consumed by turtles as they think they are jellyfishes.
