Indian Pacer Shardul Thakur Puts An End To Sachin Tendulkar’s No-10 Jersey Controversy, Changes The Number

Jersey numbers are so far one of the most curious subjects of the cricket. We all know the significance of Sachin Tendulkar’s No.10 and Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s No.7, those numbers rose to prominence because of the players who wore them. Even cricket buffs often develop certain emotional attachments to the jersey numbers that are worn by their favorite cricketers.

Out of such things, Sachin Tendulkar’s 10 is the top of everything. Legendary Cricketer Sachin Tendulkar left the pitch years back, and since then, BCCI didn’t grant his number to any of the players. Now after some considerable time, something surprising has happened during the 4th ODI of the India vs Sri Lanka series.

Much to everyone’s surprise, the young Indian cricketer Shardul Thakur, who also made his ODI debut with the match was seen wearing the jersey number 10. Well, this didn’t go well with many, people were irked with this deed of Shardul. But, jersey No. 10 is not just a number, it is an emotion for many cricket fans.

Over the years, legendary Indian batsman Sachin Tendulkar wore the jersey number 10, and hence the jersey number has attained an iconic stature in Indian cricket. The no.10 jersey is synonymous with Indian batting legend Sachin Tendulkar, who played his entire limited-overs career with this number on his back.

When asked about the reason behind wearing this number, Shardul stated that it remarked the total of his birth date comes up to be 10 (October 16, 1991). Well, there are assumptions that Sachin Tendulkar can be quoted ST, just like Shardul Thakur. On the whole, this act by Shardul wasn’t smooth, people went bashing the BCCI and the player for the same.

After the criticism and backlash over the jersey no.10, the Mumbai bowler has changed it to 54. Though BCCI has not officially retired jersey No. 10, Thakur seems to have done it on his own. On his return to the Indian squad, Thakur didn’t make the playing XI on his home turf on Sunday.

However, during the warm-ups, he was seen wearing the new jersey. One wonders whether the bowler had a change of heart or was instructed to do so. The official reason for changing the jersey number from ‘10’ to ‘54’ is being awaited.

India however, lost the first ODI after Trent Boult (4/35) and Tom Latham (103*) sank India, after Virat Kohli’s masterful 121 in his 200th ODI.
