Vesak Day 2019 is a celebration of the birthday of Buddha and his enlightenment or when Buddha himself discovered the true meaning of life.
The day is also used to reflect on the teachings of Buddha and what it means to be a part of the religion.
The members of the religion don’t believe in a single God who created the world and everything that is present in it, as a matter of fact, Buddhists believe in the teachings of Siddhartha Gautama, better known as the Buddha.
It is believed that Siddhartha Gautama was a prince in Nepal in the 5th Century BC, many say that he belonged to a wealthy family
Many believe Siddhartha Gautama realized that wealth and luxury do not bring happiness to a person’s life.
So he decided to travel alone as a homeless holy man so he could learn more about what was happening in the world by that time and what their suffering was.
After 6 years of meditating and studying about his travel experience, he became spiritually aware and got to his goal of finding meaning in life, which is now called enlightenment in their religion.
After traveling and studying everything he experiences, Siddhartha became the Buddha and for the rest of his life, the Buddha taught his followers about his experiences.
Buddha also means the awakened one or the enlightened one.
Vesak is only celebrated once every year, and this year, it will be celebrated on May 19, which is on Sunday.
Vesak does not have an exact date as it takes place on the first full moon of the ancient lunar month of Vesakha, this falls in May or in the first 2 weeks of June.
Vesak Day is celebrated in a lot of countries, which includes North and South Korea, India, and Thailand.
Usually, people who celebrate the Vesak day go to their local temple and stay there and wait for the full moon.
While waiting for the full moon, Buddhists take part in meditation and chanting or reflect on teachings of Buddha.
A lot of the Buddhists bring offerings in the temple and share their food with the people who are present in the temple.
Buddhist families decorate their houses with lanterns, they also take part in the processions and wear special white clothes to mark the occasion.
Family members and friends also send cards to their loved ones.
Buddhists also perform a ceremony that is called “Bathing the Buddha”, in which water is poured over the shoulders of the enlightened one.
This is done to remind people to clear their minds of negative thoughts.
