Dog Saliva Leaves Ohio Woman Without Arms And Legs

Marie Trainer, a woman from Ohio, contracted sepsis after a dog accidentally licked her wound. She woke earlier from a coma and discovered that her arms and legs have been amputated.

Marie was hospitalized for around 80 days and doctors said that her infection was so severe that her limbs had to be amputated.

During an interview with Fox 8 Cleveland, Marie said that she remembers lying down at a couch, but she woke up 10 days later after amputations on her legs and arms was performed by the doctors.

During the interview, Marie said, “When I opened my eyes I didn’t know where I was. It was very hard to find out that they had to remove my legs and my arms. Very hard to cope with.”

Doctors believe that Marie contracted the capnocytophaga bacteria from the saliva of her dog.

Marie and her husband just came back from a holiday in the Caribbean and she said that she thought she had normal flu.

Marie said that she had nausea, backache, and her temperatures when to the roof.

Marie rushed to the Aultman Hospital after Matthew, the husband of Marie, realized that something was wrong.

Gina Premier, the step-daughter of Marie, who is a nurse at the hospital, said, “So we were getting new symptoms and worsening symptoms very rapidly.”

Marie was placed in a medical coma and her legs and arms were amputated after they became necrotic.

The capnocytophaga bacteria is usually found in the saliva of cats and dogs.

According to Dr. Margaret Kobe, the Medical Director of the Infectious Disease at the Aultman Hospital, said that it is common in the “in the oral flora or the mouth of a dog and it can be transmitted through a bite or sometimes just contact with saliva.”

She added, “That organism is very virulent. It has the ability to induce your immune system to do some pretty horrible things.”

Our thoughts and prayers with Marie.
