A man from New Hampshire killed a coyote with his bare hands on Monday after it attacked his 2-year-old son.

The coyote reportedly grabbed the 2-year-old son by his jacket hood and dragged him to the ground.

Ian O’Reilly, the father, said that he never harmed an animal in his life.

He called the incident a “weird experience.”

The coyote bit him twice when he was trying to fend it off.

Ian reportedly kicked the coyote away with his body weight and continued to suffocate it while holding its snout shut.

The New Hampshire Fish and Game said the coyote that he killed tested positive for rabies.

Col. Kevin Jordan, the chief of the Fish and Game law enforcement division, said, “Based on all the evidence we have collected and in talking with several people who recently reported seeing coyotes acting erratically, we don’t believe this is the only coyote in the Exeter area that may have rabies.”

Ian said that it took him 10 minutes to kill the coyote.

He added, “I was able to get its head into the snow and get my hand around its snout, so it could no longer bite me.”

He continued, “And then, from there, I was able to suffocate it by using my body weight and scissor-locking it until basically expiring.”

The son of Ian did not sustain any major injuries in the attack.

Talking about his act, Ian said it was more likely an instinct.

He explained, “In the middle of the moment, you’re not really thinking or … recording a whole lot.”

Rabies is a virus that infects mammals.

When an infected animal bites a human, rabies can be transmitted from saliva through the open wound and into the nerves. The virus is then transmitted to the brain and spinal cord.

If you get bitten by a dog or other animal that can carry rabies, you should go see a doctor before the virus can become fatal.
