Durgapur Woman Gives Birth On Road After District Hospital Refused To Admit Her Despite Labor Pains

Durgapur, India: A woman reportedly gave birth on the side of a road beside the office of the SDO (Sub-Divisional Officer’s) Office after she was refused admission at the district hospital despite going through labor pain.

The victim has been identified as Puja Shaw.

Titha Goswami, the mother of Puja, said that they made several pleas to the authorities, but no one listened to them.

The Durgapur Sub-Divisional Hospital refused admission even in the midst of her daughter’s labor pains, said Gulf News.

During an interview with ANI, Titha Goswami said:

The doctors refused to admit Puja even though she was suffering labour pain. They started to get agitated by our insistence, so we left. My daughter had to give birth on the roadside as we did not have any other choice.

Anirban Koley, the Durgapur Sub-Divisional Magistrate, said that Puja and her new-born baby were brought to a hospital after the incident came to light.

Koley added:

I heard that a woman who resides on this road gave birth outside the office due to her poor condition. As soon as I heard the news, I made arrangements to admit her to the Durgapur Sub-Divisional Hospital despite protests from the doctors. Currently, the baby and her mother are at the hospital and their condition is stable.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of the victim, may their baby be healthy.
