Coronavirus Vaccine Is 90 Percent Effective, Says Top Medicine Manufacturer
A coronavirus vaccine could be introduced to the world and could be life-changing after a top medicine manufacturer said that their primary vaccine candidate is 90 percent effective.
Pfizer/BioNTech candidate is said to be performing much better than experts had hoped for.
The vaccine is one of the many that is currently in phase 3 testing.
It involves injecting a part of the virus’s genetic code into a person in order to allow their body to train its immune system against it.
This is also a completely experimental approach.
Dr. Albert Bourla, the chairman and CEO of Pfizer, released a statement about the vaccine and said:
Today is a great day for science and humanity. The first set of results from our phase 3 Covid-19 vaccine trial provides the initial evidence of our vaccine’s ability to prevent Covid-19. We are reaching this critical milestone in our vaccine development program at a time when the world needs it most with infection rates setting new records, hospitals nearing over-capacity and economies struggling to reopen.
Before this news, regulators previously said that they are willing to approve any vaccine that is over 50 percent or more effective.
There have been no serious side effects to have been reported in the trial.
The phase 3 trials will continue until there have been 164 confirmed cases.
It is likely that the success rate could change before the phase 3 of the trials could end.
Over 43,000 people have been involved in the current phase of the trial and officials of the company said that people have been protected by the virus.
Most of the people that are involved in the study are black and are from the ethnic minority.
The company is currently gathering all the safety data and will be doing so until the third week of November this year.
A dossier will be submitted to regulators for approval later this year.
If all the data please the regulators, this means that we could have a vaccine by the end of this year.
The manufacturer said that they are capable of supplying 50 million doses of the coronavirus by the end of this year.
They can sell over 1.3 billion by the end of 2021, said Pfizer.
The government of the United Kingdom has placed an order of 30 million doses for the coronavirus vaccine from Pfizer.
