A couple of months ago, we know how Sonu Nigan’s Azaan controversy had created a ripple on social media for making some eccentric statements on the ‘Azaan-Muslim call for prayer’. He boldly took on to his Twitter handle and went tweeting how he’s offended by the religious contexts.
He questioned the necessity of broadcasting the announcement on loudspeakers from mosques in public. Labeling it ‘forced religiousness’, and using the word “Gundagardi”, Sonu’s tweet created quite a stir!
However, Sonu Nigam later apologized for the same but clarified that his intention behind the tweets was to raise a social issue, and not a religious one.
But things took a ridiculous turn when a Maulvi issued fatwa against him and promised to pay Rs 10 lakhs to the one who shaves off Sonu’s head; accepting this challenge, the singer himself arranged for an Aalim and got bald in front of the media.
While some are of the opinion that Sonu is right in voicing his opinion against loudspeakers, while some think that he shouldn’t have spoken against the Muslim community. However, it ended by creating a lot of stir in the whole nation.
But now again, it is Suchitra Krishnamoorthi, actress and singer, who has taken a stand against ‘Azaan on loudspeakers’.
Actress-Singer Suchitra Krishnamoorthi has now joined the bandwagon, deeming Azaan on loudspeakers as ‘imposed religiosity.’ She tweeted,
came home at 4.45 am 2 most aggressive/ ear shattering call of azaan. Nothing more lowlife & dumb than such extreme imposed religiousity
— Suchitra (@suchitrak) July 23, 2017
That was not it. She took on trolls who tried to teach her about her religion.
While Hindoo celebs raise voice agnst Azaan,
I remind dem its good to wakeup at BrahmaMuhurt acc to Hinduism.
Azaan only helps to do so… https://t.co/erXoojTOyO— Sagarika-G (@GhoseGiri) July 23, 2017
FYI it is not Sagarika Ghose, you see. It’s a parody account. Though it was fake account’s reply, Krishnamoorthi didn’t to explain her tweet.
This is what she said thereafter.
i wake up at Brahmamuhurt of my own accord & do my prayers & riyaz.& yoga. I dont need public loudspeakers to remind me of my God or my duty https://t.co/7rPSzG1EfB

Another Twitter user countered her by saying that he lives in “an otherwise quite locality” and was OK with the temple nearby playing songs on loud speaker.
@suchitrak I live in an otherwise quite locality but the temple nearby has been playing songs on loud speaker thru the day. It’s OK with me. https://t.co/uEL1b0Eg8s

To this, she also went on to explain what exactly bothers her.
nobody objects to azaan or prayers during decent hours. But to be wakung up entire neighbourhood at 5 am is not civilized https://t.co/PBT94NtuGN

Even the Samajwadi Party Leaders bashed her for the meaningless protest on Azaan, they literally mocked the former singer saying her sleep is more important than the call to prayers.
On Monday, SP leader Juhi Singh told ANI,
“Such irresponsible comments have been made in the past also. I am unable to understand what kind of people they are. I would like to know how does azaan, which otherwise purifies you on hearing, bother her. May be her sleep is more important.”
Here are other Twitter reactions her tweet garnered:
Sunday #troll invite. Suggested line of attack – why do good girls come home so late?

There is no place of azaan thru a loudspeaker in a secular country.thiss shows India isn’t secular as it has given in to Islamists

Wondering when this Azaan controversy will end? Only time will tell. Until then, let’s hope that it ends with a solution and not another Fatwa.
