Over 2,250 Endangered Sea Turtle Eggs Were Hatched On A Beach In Mexico Thanks To Reduced Human Activity

A record number of Olive Ridley sea turtles were released in Mexico during this pandemic and the results that were shared with the public are just amazing.

According to researchers, around 2,250 turtle eggs were able to hatch into the Gulf of California thanks to reduced human activity.

Most of the time, there are only around 500 to 1,000 eggs hatched during the hatching season, but this time it was different.

Thanks to the coronavirus pandemic, the numbers saw a massive increase.

Most of the time, these creatures are killed due to boat activity, ocean pollution, and tourists invading their private spaces.

Tortugueros del Desemboque, a conversation group among the Comcáac, were there when the turtles hatched.

Mayra Estrella Astorga, a group coordinator, released a statement about the incident where they said:

This year has been one of the hardest for our community. The pandemic brought sickness and death to our people, and complicated the economic situation here. That’s why we are so happy that, in the middle of this tragedy, this miracle of nature happened – as a result of fewer fishing boats and tourists, but also through the efforts of the community.

The Olive Ridley Turtle is also known as Pacific Ridley Sea Turtle.

These turtles could only be found in the warm waters of the Pacific Ocean, the Indian Ocean, and the Atlantic Oceans.

Usually, it lays its eggs on the beaches that are located in a number of states in Mexico from the months of September and May.

These turtles are one of the smallest kids of turtles.

They are currently classed as “vulnerable” and are also included in the International Union for Conservation’s Red List.

The United States of America currently lists this animal as a threatened species.

Since the 1960s, 50 percent of their population has been wiped out.

Let’s hope the numbers of these turtles continue to increase on a yearly basis, especially during the hatching season.
