12-year-old girl and 39-year-old man killed in Kawasaki stabbing spree
2 people which includes a 12-year-old girl were killed in the Kawasaki stabbing spree, 15 other children were also injured in the stabbing spree.
This is a very rare act of public violence in Japan as it is considered as the safest country in the world.
The stabbing spree happened near a park in Kawasaki, which is 21 kilometers away from Tokyo.
3 adults were also injured in the stabbing spree, said the Kawasaki Fire Department.
The spokesperson of the Nippon Medical School Musashikosugo Hospital said that a young student girl and a 39-year-old man have passed away.
Shinzo Abe, the Prime Minister of Japan, called the stabbing spree as “heartbreaking”.
Prime Minister Shinzo said, “We must keep our children safe at all costs.”
PM Abe added, “I’ve instructed the related ministers to take immediate action to ensure the children’s safety in going to and leaving school.”
The attacker passed away from a “self-inflicted wound”, he reportedly stabbed himself on his neck after attacking the students.
Police officers from Kawasaki believe that the man was in his late 40s and early 50s.
Earlier today, NHK reported that 3 people, which includes an elementary student are still in a critical condition.
It is still not clear if the girl who passed away was amongst the 3.
Japan is considered by many as one of the safest countries in the world. The country has very low homicide rates.
Mass stabbing is really rare in the country.
3 years ago, 19 people were killed in a stabbing spree at a shelter home for the disabled people, this was considered as the deadliest mass killing in the country since World War 2 ended.
The country also has strict rules on weapons, in Japan, it is illegal for people to carry a box cutter, craft knife, pocket knife, and even a hunting knife out in public areas.
