LA Mayor To Cut $150 Million From LAPD Budget And To Reinvest It Into Communities Of Color

The mayor of Los Angeles has vowed to cut $150 million from the LAPD’s (Los Angeles Police Department) budget and will be reinvesting it into communities of color.

This comes after the death of George Floyd.

Thousands of people took the streets in Hollywood and Downtown Los Angeles, where Mayor Eric Garcetti vowed to redirect $150 million towards the black community health and education.

They will be getting the budget from the Los Angeles Police Department.

Mayor Eric Garcetti took a knee while praying with faith leaders at one protest outside police headquarters early yesterday.

However, later that day hundreds of people gathered outside the home of the mayor to demonstrate.

During a press conference, Garcetti said that he was committed to making this moment not just a moment.

The mayor said it is the time to “our rhetoric towards action to end racism in our city.”

Not only that, but the mayor also said that police officers will be required to report misconduct going forwards to intervene when witnessing displays of excessive force.

The Mayor said that the Los Angeles Department of Civil and Human Rights and an Office of Racial Equality will be up and running by the month of July.

Nury Martinez, the LA City Council President, said:

Today we intrduced a motion to cut funding to the LAPD, as we reset our priorities in the wake of the murder of #GeorgeFloyd & the #BlackLivesMatter call that we all support to end racism [sic]. This is just one small step. We cannot talk about change, we have to be about change.

Thousands of people all over the United States of America are protesting over the death of George Floyd, who was killed by an officer that kneeled over his neck for over 8 minutes.

According to news agencies in LA, thousands of people took the streets of the city as part of peaceful protests.
