Current sitting US President Joe Biden has lifted the ban on transgender people serving in the military of the country.
The new announcement lifts the ban that was imposed by Donald Trump back in the year 2017.
A spokesperson of the White House released a statement about the lift on the ban.
The statement reads:
President Biden believes that gender identity should not be a bar to military service, and that America’s strength is found in its diversity. Allowing all qualified Americans to serve their country in uniform is better for the military and better for the country because an inclusive force is a more effective force. Simply put, it’s the right thing to do and is in our national interest.
This is not the first time Joe Biden has done or said something about the Transgender community.
Last year, Biden said that it was on his agenda to get the Pentagon to let Transgender service members serve openly in the military. Talking about the ban, Joe Biden said that transgender people can shoot as straight as anyone else can shoot.
Lloyd Austin, the newly appointed Defence Secretary, is also supporting the move of Joe Biden.
During a talk with the Senate Armed Services Committee, they said:
I support the president’s plan to overturn the ban. If you’re fit and you’re qualified to serve and you can maintain the standards, you should be allowed to serve, and you can expect that I will support that throughout.
A couple of years ago, anyone that was serving in the military could be discharged for being transgender.
But everything changed under the Obama ruled USA.
At the time of Obama, Ash Carter, the Defence Secretary of the country, said that transgender people that were already serving in the army should be allowed in serving the country.
However, that changed after Donald Trump won the US elections.
Trump announced that they would be reversing that while saying that transgender people would not be allowed to serve in the army in any capacity.
Talking about the transgender people serving in the army, Trump said:
Our military must be focused on decisive and overwhelming victory and cannot be burdened with the tremendous medical costs and disruption that transgender in the military would entail.
