Vladimir Putin Agrees To Reset Term Limits And Extend His Presidency Until 2036
Vladimir Putin, the president of Russia, has agreed to reset the term limits and extend his presidency until the year 2036.
Under the current term limits of Russia, the president of the country is obliged to leave the office in the year 2024, which is the end of 2 consecutive terms.
In January this year, President Putin proposed changing the constitution, which would limit to 2 terms overall.
On Tuesday, the parliamentarians offered a not-unexpected lifeline to their patron.
Valentina Tereshkova, a former cosmonaut and uber loyal deputy of the ruling party faction in the State Duma, said the changes should be dictated by the will of the people.
But the opinion of Valentina was clear, which is to either remove the term limit or reset it for President Putin.
Vychelsav Volodin, convened a 90-minute pause in the parliamentary sitting to discuss the proposals.
After the pause, Vladimir Putin made a short trip from Kremlin to give his reaction.
Vladimir Putin said he was open to the idea of a further 2 elections, which will extend his reign to his years in his 80s.
Vladimir Putin said, “It’s a possible option in principle, but on one contrition: if the constitutional court decides that such an amendment will not contravene the constitution.”
Putin added, “We aren’t adopting a new constitution, but making significant amendments to it.”
Under the proposals that Vladimir Putin placed ahead of the parliament, it would make appointments to the constitutional court are to be made by the president by himself.
The rules are one of the areas that will help the president get power.
President Putin had a problem getting away with the 2024 elections, but thanks to the new reforms, he can get past them pretty easily.
