2-Year-Old Boy With Genetic Disorder Dies After Father Stole Over $150,000 Raised For Son’s Treatment
2-year-old João Miguel Alves passed away last week in Brazil after his father stole the money for his treatment, and spent it on drugs, hookers, hotels, and wild parties.
João Miguel Alves passed away on October 17, 2019, after a long battle with Spinal Muscular Atrophy, a rare genetic disorder.
37-year-old Mateus Henrique Leroy Alves was arrested by the police on July 22, 2019, after his wife reported him to the police.
Authorities arrested Alves at a luxury hotel, where he was staying for 2 months.
Alves reportedly spent $150,000 on designer clothes, watches, drugs, booze, and hookers.
Medical experts diagnosed João Miguel with Spinal Muscular Atrophy when he was just 7-months-old.
Karine Rodrigues, the wife of Alves, raised money through social media last year.
Each treatment of Spinraza costs around $90,500.
The family gathered over $248,000 in one year, but 150,000 of that money was stolen by Alves, the husband of Rodrigues.
Alves ditched the family earlier this year and stole money that was supposed to be spent on the treatment of his son.
Alves reportedly told Rodrigues that he was leaving for Belo Horizante to undergo training for a job.
He only returned twice to meet his family.
The money that was raised by the family was deposited into 4 accounts, in which 2 were under the name of Alves.
Alves started to do a number of large withdrawals and did a number of bank transfers.
On July 8, 2019, Rodrigues became suspicious and went to the police to file a report against her husband.
A week after the report, the police arrested Alves at a hotel in Salvador, Mexico.
When Alves was arrested by the police, he reportedly told the officers that he was a victim of an extortion scheme.
The government agreed to cover the cost of the child’s first 3 treatments, and he received the first dose of the treatment last week.
But sadly, the 2-year-old boy passed inside his home last week.
