Scientists Have Developed A Vaccine For Cats That Could Stop Humans From Having Allergic Reactions To Them
Godsend scientists have successfully developed a vaccine for cats that could stop humans from allergic reactions to them.
Another great thing about this news is that it’s the cat who will get injected, not the humans.
Cats 0, Humans 1.
Allergies that are caused by cats are triggered by a protein that is called the Fel-d1, which is present in the fur of the Cat.
Once smelled or inhaled, it can trigger a rush of histamine, which is a chemical that is pumped out by the immune system when it thinks it is under attack.
This response is normal, but it can cause distressing symptoms which include coughing, hives, rash, red eyes, redness of the skin, runny or itchy nose, and sneezing.
According to Charity Allergy UK, the allergy affects half of the asthmatic children.
Anyone who has cat allergies has medications and even sometimes need inhalers.
In order to create the vaccine, researchers have been working tirelessly for nearly 10 years so they could create the “HypoCat”.
The HypoCat is a vaccine that triggers the immune system of the cat to attack and destroy the Fel-d1 protein present on its fur.
A study that was published in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology said that the vaccine reduced the amount of Fel-d1 protein that is being produced.
Out of the 54 cats that were tested at the University Hospital Zurich in Switzerland, all saw an increase in the defensive cells that are requested to destroy the protein.
The HypoCat could be available in three years.
Scientists who made the vaccine said, “Both humans and animals could profit from this treatment. Allergic cat owners would reduce their risk of developing chronic diseases, such as asthma. Their cats could stay in the households and not need to be relinquished to animal shelters.”
Another win win for animal lovers!!
