Mountain Biker Survives Grizzly Bear Attack With Pocket Knife
Colin Dowler, a mountain biker, speaks out for the first time since he was attacked by a grizzly bear during his biking trip in British Columbia, Vancouver.
Colin defended himself from the grizzly bear with a pen knife, he is currently undergoing extensive treatment at the Vancouver General Hospital.
Authorities said he is lucky that he survived the attack.
The incident happened when Dowler was on a biking trip in a remote area of British Columbia.
He was suddenly attacked by a 350-pound grizzly bear.
Dowler reportedly brought a pepper spray with him during the trip but lost it at some point during his biking trip.
Dowler spent the night in the woods before heading back home the following day.
When Dowler was headed back home the following day, he spotted a big grizzly bear 100 feet away from him.
Dowler said, “I wasn’t sure what to do, I just started having a conversation with the bear.”
You may think that why did he start a conversation with a bear?
Well, it is proven that if you have a conversation with a bear, it is a known tactic that could keep it calm. Dowler also chucked his bag on the ground so he could distract the animal, but all his efforts failed and it attacked him instead.
Dowler added, “It was just to try to hold him at a distance and let him know that, I don’t know, that I’m here. It just seemed like a way to hold the bear back and that it might make him think twice.”
The bear then bit the pole and stepped over his bike before it bit his left flank.
The bear then carried him to the side of the road and started to chew on his stomach.
Dowler said he could even hear the teeth on his bone while the grizzly bear chews his flesh.
Even after all the attacks, Dowler managed to bring out his pocket knife and managed to stab the neck of the bear and scare him off for a while.
The little room gave him the chance to get back to his bike and to pedal 4.5 miles.
Dowler managed to arrive at a logging camp before collapsing and even managed to tell the workers that he was mauled by a grizzly bear.
