In May, Lowe stopped a student from harming himself and other students with a shotgun.
Lowe is a football and track coach at the Parkrose High School in Portland.
The coach disarmed the student and handed the firearm to a nearby faculty member.
The footage of the incident was shared to the public in October.
After disarming the student, Lowe hugged the student in his arms and held him extremely close, making sure he felt well.
The student, who said he wanted to commit suicide, was sentenced to 3 years of probation and was asked to join a mental health treatment program.
He was charged for bringing a weapon to school.
At the time of the incident, Lowe said, “In that time, I felt compassion for him. A lot of times, especially when you’re young, you don’t realize what you’re doing until it’s over.”
Lowe was honored with the Single Act of Heroism Award by the society.
