“Shoot Them Dead”: Philippine President Duterte Sends Out Warning To People Violating Lockdown
Rodrigo Duterte, the president of the Philippines, is sending out a warning to residents that are violating the lockdown measures of the country.
President Duterte said that he will be ordering the military and the police of the country to shoot anyone that create trouble during a month-long lockdown of the island of Luzon.
The comment comes amidst the precautionary measures of the country to stop the fast-spreading virus.
In a late-night televised national address on Wednesday, President Duterte said, “Let this be a warning to all. Follow the government at this time because it is critical that we have order.”
The president added, “And do not harm the health workers, the doctors … because that is a serious crime. My orders to the police and the military, if anyone creates trouble, and their lives are in danger: shoot them dead.”
The president continued, “Do not intimidate the government. Do not challenge the government. You will lose.”
The warning of President Duterte comes after residents of a slum area in Quezon City, Manila, staged a protest along a highway.
The residents were claiming that they had not received any food packs and other relief supplies since the lockdown began more than two weeks ago.
According to a police report, village security officers and the police urged the residents to go back to their homes, however, no one agreed.
As a result, the police were brought and 20 people were arrested.
As of writing this article, 2311 people have been infected with the coronavirus in the Philippines, which has resulted in the deaths of 96 people.
