Ratha Saptami 2018 Importance Significance – Magha Saptami Date Rituals History

Ratha Sapthami is also called as Magha Sapthami which is devoted to Lord Surya. For decades it is believed that Lord Surya began to glow and provide light to the universe on this special day. In another way, it is also called as the date of birth of Lord Surya. Because of this, it is also called as Surya Jayanthi.

Sins are of seven types like sins done knowingly, unknowingly, by words, by the body, by the mind, in current birth and premature birth. It is believed that one who worships Lord Surya on this will get rid of all sins.

Ratha Saptami is symbolic of the change of season to spring and the start of the harvesting season. For most Indian farmers, it is an auspicious beginning of the New Year. The festival is observed by all Hindus in their houses and in innumerable temples dedicated to Surya, across India.

Rituals during Ratha Sapthami:

  • Devotees wake up before sunrise and perform holy bath.
  • This holy bath should be done prior to sunrise which is called as Ghati time.
  • Bath before sunrise on this day is for good health and wealth.
  • Most people go to rivers for this holy bath.
  • One should offer water slowly during the sunrise with help of a small pot.
  • Later devotees offer Ghee Deepak and worship Lord Surya with flowers, Kapoor, and dhoop.
