From multinational companies to high-profile politicians, social networking portals seem to have become an integral part of the society. Whether it’s activism, distribution of information or even networking, social media has become a pivotal platform to reach the masses.

Cricketers strike a chord with the fans through their social media profiles, the various cricket boards of different playing nations, too, have been seen riding the wave. From BCCI to Cricket Australia, the boards have been using social media to generate the buzz around their teams.

The margin for error for the cricket boards is very less and a gaffe can surely leave them red-faced – something the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) learned the hard way. During a must-win match for both Sri Lanka and Pakistan in ICC Champions Trophy to qualify for the Semi-Finals, PCB was updating their fans with the scores.

Pakistan cricket team secured a battling victory over Sri Lanka in their final Group B match, and the effect of their struggle was felt by the board PCB’s Twitter handle as well, which committed a blunder during Sri Lanka’s batting.

Pakistan cricket board’s Twitter account was constantly tweeting the updates of the match and committed an unforgivable when Sri Lanka were 82/2. However, PCB mistakenly tweeted: “OUT! Kusal Mendis (27) b Hasan Ali. Sri Lanka: 282/2 (14.5 overs)” instead of “Sri Lanka had lost two wickets at the score of 82 runs and not 282 in 14.5 overs.”

The tweet, however, got the wings and was spread over the social media sites within seconds. Twitterati, who fail to let any trolling opportunity slip by, instantly reminded PCB’s Twitter handle of the mistake.

Apart from this, surprisingly, Pakistan managed to defeat Sri Lanka and qualify to the Semi-finals. Batting performance by Sarfraz Ahmed and Mohammad Amir helped Pakistan secure a spot in the last 4. Having qualified as the second team from Group B, Pakistan now faces hosts England for a place in the final.
