10 Wrestling Championship Belts And The Amazing Stories Behind Them

WWE is one of the biggest platforms of entertainment. People just love the sport and always feel excited to watch the sport. From childhood to the old age, people watch the sport and this’s how the sport is popular all over the world.

From 1990’s to the present, the sport has graced a lot of attraction to it. The world has seen many wrestlers who entertained us and still entertaining. It was a great experience to witness the likes of Goldberg, Brock Lesnar, Big Show, Triple H, and John Cena.

Wrestlers will be honored with belts in every championship match and people and fans would always stay eager to watch who wins and takes the title. Here are few magnificent Championship Belts which are given to the champions:

1. WWE World Heavyweight Championship Belt:

Earlier, this belt was also called as the Big Gold Belt. It first appeared at the National Wrestling Alliance before becoming the biggest WCW title. It is one of two world titles in the WWE, that was now created for the Raw brand as a result of the 2016 WWE draft.

The title is currently held by A.J. Styles, who is in his first reign.

2. WWE Universal Championship Belt:

The WWE Universal Championship is a World Heavyweight Championship on the Raw brand. It is one of two world titles in the promotion and was created on July 25, 2016, to rival the WWE World Championship, which became exclusive to SmackDown following the re-introduction of the brand extension on July 19, 2016.

The championship is named in honor of the WWE Universe. Finn Balor was the inaugural champion. The title is currently held by Kevin Owens, who is in his first reign.

3. WWE United States Championship Belt:

The WWE United States Championship is a professional wrestling championship on the Raw brand. It is one of the two secondary titles of the promotion along with the Intercontinental Championship on the SmackDown brand.

The first wrestler to win this modern belt was the great Eddie Guerrero in 2003 and it is currently held by Roman Reigns, who is in his first reign.

4. WWE SmackDown Tag Team Championship Belt:

The WWE SmackDown Tag Team Championship is a professional wrestling world tag team championship created for the SmackDown brand. The championship belt design is nearly identical to the Raw Tag Team Championship, with the differences being that the leather strap is blue to symbolize its exclusivity to SmackDown, and the plates are silver.

The current SmackDown Tag Team Champions are Heath Slater and Rhyno.

5. WWE Intercontinental Championship Belt:

The Intercontinental Championship is created for the SmackDown brand. Along with the United States Championship on the Raw brand, it is one of WWE’s secondary titles. It was established on September 1, 1979 ,with Pat Patterson as the inaugural champion.

The term “intercontinental” in the title originally referred to North and South America. In 1985, the championship belt design changed, the center plate now centered on the Atlantic Ocean, in a map including western Africa and Europe.

The current champion is Dolph Ziggler, who is in his fifth reign.

6. WWE Women’s’ World Championship Belt:

It is created for the Raw brand. Introduced as the WWE Women’s Championship on April 3, 2016, at WrestleMania 32, it replaced the Divas Championship and has a unique title history, separate from WWE’s original Women’s Championship and the Divas Championship. Watching Lita, Victoria, and Trish Stratus show how aggressive they can be in the ring.

As a result of the 2016 draft, the championship became exclusive to Raw with a subsequent rename, and SmackDown created the WWE SmackDown Women’s Championship as a counterpart title. It is currently held by Sasha Banks, who is in her second reign.

7. WWE Cruiserweight Championship Belt:

It is created for the Raw brand. Unveiled on September 14, 2016, as the award for the inaugural Cruiserweight Classic, it is contested in WWE’s Cruiserweight Division by wrestlers at a maximum weight of 205 lb (93 kg).

The Cruiserweight Classic was a WWE Network series and tournament for cruiserweights. Tournament qualifying matches took place in various promotions of the independent circuit, including well-known promotions such as Revolution Pro Wrestling, Progress Wrestling, and Evolve.

The final of the Cruiserweight Classic came down to T.J. Perkins and Gran Metalik. Before the final match, Triple H revealed that the winner would not only receive a trophy but would also become WWE Cruiserweight Champion for the new cruiserweight division on the Raw brand. Perkins defeated Metalik to become the inaugural champion.

8. TNA X Division Championship Belt:

It is a professional wrestling championship owned by the Total Nonstop Action Wrestling (TNA). It is primarily defended in TNA and (as per a talent exchange agreement) also formerly in Wrestle-1 as well. Like most professional wrestling championships, the title is won as a result of a scripted match. There have been 68 reigns among 30 wrestlers.

The title has previously been known as the NWA X Championship, the NWA–TNA X Championship, and the NWA–TNA X Division Championship.

9. ECW World Heavyweight Championship Belt:

It was a professional wrestling world heavyweight championship originally used in Extreme Championship Wrestling (ECW) and later, World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE). It was the original world title of the Extreme Championship Wrestling promotion.  It was established under Extreme Championship Wrestling in 1994 but was originally introduced in 1992 by the promotion’s precursor,Eastern Championship Wrestling. The inaugural champion was Jimmy Snuka.

The title was deactivated in 2001 when ECW went out of business. ECW was then purchased by WWE two years later during the summer of 2003.

10. WCW United States Championship Belt:

It was created when Jim Crockett Promotions officially changed to World Championship Wrestling and they broke away from the National Wrestling Alliance. When WCW was purchased in 2001 by Vince McMahon the title was then owned by the World Wrestling Federation as with all other previous championships in the promotion.

The title reappeared on television when the last champion Booker T “invaded” the WWF during the Invasion storyline. The title was officially a WWF championship until the WCW United States Championship title retired in the WWF at Survivor Series 2001.
