MES is a military organisation but has both Army and Civilian component of officers and other subordinate staff. While execution of all construction works is through contracts, execution of all maintenance services is carried out both through contracts as well as departmentally employed labour (DEL). The Military Engineering Services are responsible for the design, construction and maintenance of all buildings, airfields, dock installations, etc. along with accessory services such as military roads, bulk water and electricity supply, drainage, refrigeration and furniture, required by the Army, Navy and Air Force in India.

Written Exam for the Military Engineer Services consists of Multiple Choice Objective Type. It includes 130 questions from the following topics:
- Intelligence & Reasoning :::: 25 marks
- Numerical Aptitude :::: 25 marks
- General English & General Awareness:::: 30 marks
- Specialized Topic :::: 50 marks
Applicant has to complete the exam paper within 120 minutes. There should be a deduction of 0.25 for each wrong answer. The selection of candidates will be done on the basis of written examination and Personal Interview.
