Thousands Of South Africans Queue For Food In Miles-Long Line During Coronavirus Lockdown

Thousands of people queue up for food in miles-long line during the coronavirus lockdown in South Africa.

The scene was captured by an aerial device earlier this week.

Images show thousands of people in a miles-long line as they wait for food.

Residents of the slums of Mooiplaas and Spruit were seen on the outskirts of Pretoria after private businesses donated around 8,000 hampers.

Food parcels were reportedly organized by the Tshwane Muslim Community and the Sutherland Ridge Ilkon Park and Westhills business communities.

The food packets will feed around 12,000 families, confirmed Yusuf Abramjee, the spokesman of the charity coalition.

Yusuf Abramjee, a social activist, said that the food id was just a drop in the ocean for people that are hungry during this coronavirus lockdown.

Abramjee, who helped hand out food packages, said:

The need for food is massive. More than 80% of this community are foreigners and they have not received any help from the government. We are happy we made a small difference. That just shows you the levels of desperation that we have. I’ve not seen anything on this scale, not these levels of poverty and hunger in South Africa. It’s heartbreaking.

He said that the queue managed to reach as long as 2.5 miles at one stage.
