Nextbit Robin: First Cloud-Based Smartphone Shipments Begin From February 16

At the ongoing CES 2016 tradeshow, Nextbit Chief Designer Scott Croyle announced its first cloud-based smartphone namely Robin. During the show, the company has revealed that the Nextbit Robin Kickstarter backers will receive the handset starting February 16. Particularly, the initial 1,000 backers will get their units shipped on that day, while the other backers will get them around the end of February.

Croyle added that the device given to backers will be GSM-based version only. The CDMA version of the smartphone will arrive later this year. Last year, in the month  of October, the company has announced that the smartphone is available for pre-orders in multiple countries including India. Now, the pre-orders for the smartphone can be made until January 15. The device, which starts at $399 (approximately Rs. 26,000), will cost users another $70 (approximately Rs. 4,600) to get it shipped to India.

Nextbit is a startup that claims of experts from Apple, Google, and HTC on its team has given the Robin high-end hardware specifications and solves the limited storage problem in smartphones with a cloud-based storage solution. The device automatically backs up photos and other data that you haven’t used newly to the cloud to free up space on your smartphone, which is synced every time users connect to Wi-Fi.

The company had places the device up on Kickstarter for commercial support, where it received an amazing response. For the $500,000 (approximately Rs. 3.26 crores) goal the company had set, it received $1,362,344 (approximately Rs. 8.9 crores) in funding.

Robin is the first cloud smartphone which is developed with impressive hardware specifications. Here are the amazing specifications of Robin:

Display: Robin has an amazing display of 5.2-inch full-HD IPS LCD display with a pixel resolution of 1080×1920pixels and with Gorilla Glass 4 protection which has a plastic body.

Processor: The device is powered by a hexacore Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 processor.

OS: The smartphone runs on latest version of Android 6.0 Marshmallow Operating system.

RAM: The handset is packed with a memory of 3GB of RAM.

Camera: Robin comes equipped with a 13MP rear camera that sports a phase detection autofocus and dual-tone flash. On the other side, the smartphone bears a 5MP front camera.

Battery: The device is power-packed by a 2680mAh battery with Quick Charge support including USB Type-C charging port.

Connectivity: The Robin smartphone supports the following connectivity options:

  • USB Type-C charging port
  • Single SIM

Add-ons: Robin comes with an additional feature that sports dual front-facing speakers and a fingerprint sensor.

Colors: The handset is exclusively available in two color variants such as Midnight and Mint.

The company claims that the Robin smartphone is absolutely carrier unlocked. The bootloader of the handset is unlocked too, which actually means that one could flash their own favoured custom Android ROMs on the device.
