Navratri is one of the most popular and auspicious festivals celebrated in India concerning Durga Matha. As there are different cultures and customs in India, Navratri is also celebrated differently in different parts of the country. Until the ninth date of Ashwin Shukla Pratipada, special worship of Goddess Durga is performed in Navratri.

There are mainly two spring and Sharad Navratri. The worship of Maa Durga Shakti in Sharad Navratri holds special significance. There are many assumptions and traditions prevalent in these nine days, which our elders have taught us. Even today we are following them.

The devotees, who worship Durga Matha keep vow for nine days according to their resolutions. Some people do the foodless fasting while some take food after breaking the fast in the evening. Also, some people only take a fruit diet or milk in fasting during Navratri.

While Do’s are most important while worshipping Goddess Durga, Don’ts are much more important to be considered.

1. Do not have a haircut during this Navaratri period.

2. People seek blessings of Durga Matha by Kalash Stapana in front of the goddess. For entire 9 days, the devotees must lit Akand Joth for Durga Matha. And they must ensure the presence of at least one person in home 24×7 during this period.

3. People who are fasting should not cut Lemons in their homes. You can use lemon juice available in bottles though.

4. People who fast during Navaratri, they shouldn’t sleep in the afternoon. As it is believed that sleeping during the day on a fast negates all the good karma that you gain from the fast.

5. The devotees who fast can have a fruit when they feeling like starving.

6. Make sure to stay hydrated. During Navaratri, people should drink a lot of water that eventually increases positive energy in them. However, they don’t feel like hungry.

7. Do not wear slippers in the house for all these 9 days or avoid getting into the puja room wearing one.

8. Do not gossip, tell lies or use harsh words/curse others.

9. Don’t starve yourself, eat small meals through the day. However, don’t wait for the sunset to eat one large meal. Divide your meals and have them in small portions.

10. Coming to vegetables, it is said that only potatoes have to be eaten during this period. Potatoes are not the only things you can eat on a fast. Depending on the type of fast you could have tomatoes, paneer and bottle gourd. Sabud dana is always a great source of fiber.

11. A good choice to kill hunger and savor the taste. Mix Samak rice with some veggies and have it with some curd.

12. Instead of sugar, you should use jaggery. Sugar causes weight gain and lethargy. You can also have honey.

Follow these simple rules and truly Maa Durga will bless you always. It is to be believed that after performing all 9 days fast with true and pure heart, one’s wish is fulfilled.
