The history of Ramadan starts 1400 years ago in Arab, Muslims were then Known for their mercy, truthfulness, simplicity, generosity, and righteousness. Ramadan, which is also called as Ramaza, Ramadhan, Ramathan, or Ramzan, is the ninth month of the Islamic Calendar, it is also known as the month of fasting to commemorate the first revelation of the Quran to Mohammad according to the belief of Islam teachings. The Ramadan is regarded as one of the 5 pillars of the religion. The month has 29 or 30 days, the days are based on the visual sightings of the crescent moon.

Ramadan or Ramadhan comes from the Arabic root ar-ramad or ramida, which translates to dryness or scorching heat.

The fasting is required for Muslim adults, but for those who are pregnant, chronically ill, menstruating, diabetic, breastfeeding, and are really old, they can skip it.

Fasting during Ramadan was made obligatory in the month of Sha’ban, in the 2nd year after Muslims moved from Mecca to Medina.

This year the Ramadan Starts on May 6 and ends on June 3.

In the 2nd Chapter, 185th Verse of the Quran, it says:

“The month of Ramadan is that in which was revealed the Quran; a guidance for mankind, and clear proofs of the guidance, and the criterion (of right and wrong). And whosoever of you is present, let him fast the month, and whosoever of you is sick or on a journey, a number of other days. Allah desires for you ease; He desires not hardship for you; and that you should complete the period, and that you should magnify Allah for having guided you, and that perhaps you may be thankful.”

The Quran says that fasting was made obligatory to attain (taqwa) fear of God.
