Jadavpur University Entrance Exam 2018: Only 1700 students want admission in JU, Kolkata. An all-time-low was seen in a number of appeared candidates in JU Entrance Exam on Monday. The staff of a public state university located in Kolkata, West Bengal, India – Jadavpur University was shocked because of very low number of entrance test takers.

On 23rd July 2018, students looking for admission to Bengali and English undergraduate courses took an entrance test. Only 22% of 1848 (total Bengali applicants enrolled) and 27.5% of 4713 (total English applicants enrolled) appeared in the examination. 

Similarly, 26% of 2,200 (total political science applicants enrolled) and 23.3% of 1,266 (total philosophy applicants enrolled) appeared on Tuesday. While today’s (Wednesday, July 25, 2018) schedule includes comparative literature admission tests (11:30 AM – 1:30 PM) and History admission tests (02:30 PM to 04:30 PM).

One of the most reality-based reasons disclosed by faculties about students lacking interest in taking admission in Jadavpur University is a better educational system of a collegiate public state university located in the same state (and district) i.e. Calcutta University.

With CBCS (choice-based credit system) and semester system, classes on 24 January 1857 founded – the University of Calcutta has already begun the classes a month earlier. Choosing not to waste a year, numerous Jadavpur University volunteers have already taken an admission in Calcutta University.


Even after re-scheduling English Admission test date on July 23, 2018, which was earlier coinciding with July 21 Trinamool Martyrs’ Day rally. No major improvement in the number of candidates appeared has been observed. On 11th July 2018, official notification regarding Admission to B.A. (Hons) Courses, Session 2018-2019 was uploaded on official website.

Experts have concluded that absence of around 3/4th of the students even after filling up an application form for entrance examination is mainly due to growth in the number of agitations. Converting the University’s environment from BA aspirants’ hub to non-user friendly. Back on 4th July 2018, students of the university raised a voice against vice-chancellor Suranjan Das for removing entrance exams for six arts subjects.

According to which, the revised selection procedures and revised schedule of written tests for admission to B.A. (Hons.) courses had been published on the University website.
