Hindus are very much excited for Kartika month every year as they hold immense importance to worship lord Shiva and Vishnu. This year also the people around India are gearing up for the celebration of Kartika Purnima which had a great importance in this month.

This year 2017, Kartika Purnima is falling on 4th November. People will visit temples of both the deities and worship them all through the day. Kartik Purnima is closely associated with Prabodhini Ekadashi which marks the end of Chaturmas, a four-month period when Vishnu is believed to sleep. Prabodhini Ekadashi signifies the awakening of the god. Chaturmas penance ends on this day. Many fairs that begin on Prabodhini Ekadashi end on Kartik Purnima, Kartik Purnima usually being the most important day of the fair. Fairs that conclude on this day include Prabodhini Ekadashi celebrations at Pandharpur and Pushkar Fair. Kartik Purnima is also the last day to perform Tulsi Vivah ceremony that can be performed from Prabodhini Ekadashi.

Significance:

On this day Lord Vishnu is worship in most of the places as it is heard that Lord Vishnu who incarnated as Matsya or Matsyavataram which is the first of his ten avatars said to happen on this day. The other reason why Lord Shiva is worshiped is, he killed the demon king Tripurasura or Tripurari on this day. So in this day, light diyas in their houses and around to celebrate this Deva Deepavali.

Devotees also light the diyas on the floats made out of Banana tree stems and leave them on the riverside. Some devotees light the diyas near Tulsi plant.

Kartika Purnima Fast:

The devotee will perform fast on this day and light the diyas at night and stop their fast. They go to rivers and takes a holy bath in the early morning and pray to Lord Shiva and start their fast. People also follow few other things like performing Rudra Abhishekam, and some special poojas on this day. This day is also considered as the most auspicious day to perform Satyanarayana Swamy Vrat.

A mela or Jatara is held at the places of temples and especially ar the Ananthagiri Padmanabha Swami Temple in Andhra Pradesh.
