Pregnancy is the most exciting and beautiful period of woman’s life. This is also one very emotional phase a woman goes through in her lifetime. Being pregnant and expecting a child is definitely something precious and it is always a joy to bring a new life into this world. However, the happiness doesn’t seem to be there if the chances of mother’s survival are bleak with the pregnancy, as in the case of this woman.

This bittersweet story began in Portugal when Sandra Pedro (37) visited the doctor after realizing that she was pregnant. But, she was warned by the doctors that going ahead with the pregnancy would prove to be fatal to her life, as a result of her medical history.

Sandra suffered from a history of health ailments.

Sandra Pedro had a history of having suffered both pneumonia and heart problems. She had also been in a coma once before and had undergone kidney surgery due to a tumor.

But, she determined to take whatever risks in order to give birth to her child. But, then something worse happened. Sandra Pedro was 17 weeks pregnant when she collapsed in tears from a severe headache. She was then rushed to the hospital but was declared brain dead. She suffered a brain hemmorage.

A Miracle Happened!

Doctors planned on pulling the plug the next day until they realized she still held some life. She was on the brink of death, yet her baby boy kept growing inside her.

This was certainly a first in Portugal and one of a kind the world over. The baby inside the mother had positive vital signs! As much as it was unimaginable, the boy’s heart had a regular and steady heartbeat. Doctors could not believe this; it was certainly a miracle!

Her family decided that they would keep the baby alive after the doctors explained them about how they can put the woman remain alive, totally dependent on machines to feed her, help her breathe, and fortify her with the hormones necessary for her unborn child until he was developed enough to live outside the womb.

For the next nearly four months, doctors nurtured the baby inside its lifeless mother, as if to take her place. Nurses stroked and cuddled the baby bump as it grew larger. Meanwhile, doctors carefully monitored the child’s progress until they deemed it was capable of living outside the womb.

Finally, the baby was born.

The miracle baby was born after living for 107 days in the womb of his brain-dead mother (longer than any other baby to have survived inside a brain-dead mother before birth). He was delivered at 32 weeks of gestation, approximately eight weeks earlier than full-term but seemed to be healthy. His vitals were strong and he weighed 5lb 2oz. The baby was put in an incubator and the doctors took well care of it.

Once the baby was delivered, Sandra’s tubes and the ventilator was disconnected. Sandra Pedro was buried the day after the baby was born.
