Special CBI Judge Anil Kumar Sisodia has sentenced Sanjeev Kumar, an assistant commissioner in north MCD, to spend four years in prison after he pleaded guilty in demanding a bribe from his colleague.

Investigations revealed that Kumar asked for a bribe so he could grant his colleague a promotion.

Kumar was sentenced by Judge Anil Kumar Sisodia under the Prevention of Corruption Act Section 13.

Investigations revealed that when Sanjeev was working as an assistant commissioner at the general branch of the north MCD, he offered a promotion to Sunil Kumar, a billing clerk if he paid Rs. 50,000 to him.

Sanjeev promised that he would help promote him to a licensing inspector if he gave him Rs. 50,000.

But, Sunil Kumar refused to pay him Rs. 50,000 and after this, Sanjeev started to threaten and harass Kumar.

Sunil Kumar reported what Sanjeev was doing to him to the Central Bureau of Investigation, the agency laid a trap for Sanjeev in which officers caught Sanjeev Kumar accepting the money from Sunil Kumar.

Throughout the trial, Sanjeev Kumar said that the money Sunil Kumar paid him was part of the repayment of the money that he had given to him as a loan.

Judge Sisodia said, “I am of the considered opinion that the prosecution has succeeded in proving the charges against the accused beyond reasonable doubts. Accordingly, the accused is convicted for the charged offenses under section 7 of PC Act and Section 13 (2) read with section 13(1)(d) of PC Act, 1988.”

When the sentence was handed out, the court said, “In the case in hand, the convict is a government servant and what he was found indulged in corruption. However, there are no aggravating circumstances against the convict as he is neither a previous convict nor he is involved in any other criminal case. The convict has three children and aged parents dependent upon him for their livelihood.”

The special court has also ordered Sanjeev Kumar to pay Rs. 40,000 as a fine.
