Mysterious Epileptic Illness In India Leaves Hundreds Of People In Government Hospital

It’s not yet over, says the year 2020.

A mystery illness in India has baffled health experts as it has affected hundreds of people and has been the cause of the death of 1 person.

Amidst this pandemic, the mystery illness is creating a scare in the southern state of Andhra Pradesh.

People are nauseous and others are unconscious, said local doctors.

According to official data, around 227 people have been hospitalized because of this mystery illness and 1 person has passed away.

Officials are currently investigating the cause of the symptoms.

The health minister of the state, Alla Kali Krishna Sriniva, confirmed all the patients admitted to the hospital.

They also did coronavirus testing, and all of them tested negative, said a report by BBC News.

The medical officer at the Eluru Government Hospital released a statement about the incident, where they said:

The people who fell sick, especially the children, suddenly started vomiting after complaining of burning eyes.

The person that passed away was a 45-year-old man that was admitted to the Eluru Government Hospital on December 6, 2020.

The man had nausea and epilepsy symptoms.

At the time of writing this article, 70 people have been discharged from the government hospital of Eluru.

157 others are still being treated for the mystery illness.

Chief Minister Jaganmohan Reddy confirmed the incident and said that teams are being sent to the town to investigate the mystery illness.

Healthcare workers have been deploying a number of tests on blood, the brain, and cerebral spinal fluid, despite all that, the authorities still could not find anything.

Water contamination has been ruled out.

Healthy Minister Srinava said:

We ruled out water contamination or air pollution as the cause after officials visited the areas where people fell sick. It is some mystery illness and only lab analysis will reveal what it is.

Chandrababu Naidu, president of the opposition Telugu Desam Party, released a statement about the mystery illness on Twitter.

The statement reads:

I demand an impartial, full-fledged inquiry into the incident. Floods, cyclone or healthcare, the YSRCP Govt has been caught napping in emergency situations. Can there be a more unfortunate & bigger failure than this? The Eluru water contamination incident calls for a declaration of Health Emergency in Andhra Pradesh. Enough… the Govt’s negligence & the deterioration of healthcare services across AP stands exposed today.

Let’s hope the mystery illness will be non-fatal.
