1 Kilogram Of Maijan Golden Tips Tea Sold For Rs. 70,501 At Guwahati Tea Auction Centre

A rare type of tea, the Maijan Golden Tips, from the Maijan tea estate, that is specially grown in Assam was auctioned at Rs. 70,501 per kilogram at the Guwahati Tea Auction Centre on July 31, 2019.

The Orthodox Golden Tip has just set a record for the most expensive tea sold at the action.

The Maijan Tea Estate is owned by the Assam Company India, which is the oldest tea company in the world. The Orthodox Golden Tip is grown in the Maijan Garden in the Dibrugarh District of Assam.

The tea is expensive because of how old its plants are. The Orthodox Golden Tip were sown over a century ago and its tea creates a unique aroma and has a unique texture.

In a statement that was released by the Assam Company India, they said that the tea was bought by the Mundhra Tea Company.

The tea will be shared between a client of the company and will be placed for sale on the official tea store of the company.

Bidyananda Barkatoky, a member of the governing body of the Guwahati Tea Auction Centre, said, “The Assam tea variety setting a new record is an encouraging development for those who are trying to develop specialty tea. In fact many growers are now focusing on specialty tea which still fetches excellent prices, but industry cannot survive on specialty tea since its production is minimal.”

The Director of the Assam Company India, Sanjay Jain, talked about how important this auction was for the tea industry.

Mr. Jain said, “Today when the Industry is at the threshold of survival, it becomes imperative, that the Tea Industry focuses on production of Good quality teas which will entice the consumers to consume more and more cups of tea which will eventually lead to higher tea demand and increase the per capita consumption of Indian Tea from the present 750 gms per consumer (one of the lowest in the world).”

The Secretary of the Guwahati Tea Auction Buyers Association, Dinesh Bihani, said that it is still “unbelievable” that the Maijan Golden Tips have been sold for Rs. 70501 per kilogram at the auction.

This is now being considered as a new world record for any public auction.

Earlier this week, the Manohari Gold Tea was sold for Rs. 50,000 per kilogram at the same auction.
