276kg Bluefin Tuna Sells For $1.8 Million In First Tokyo Auction Of 2020
A Bluefin tuna fish weighing 276 kilograms was sold in the first auction of the New Year at Tokyo’s Toyusu Fish Market for $1.8 million USD, which is equivalent to 193.2 million yen.
The massive Bluefin tuna was caught off the northern Aomori Prefecture and it weighed 608lbs, which is equivalent to 276 kilograms.
Kiyoshi Kimura, the so-called sushi king of Japan, spent nearly 700,000 yen per kilogram on the 276-kilogram Bluefin tuna.
Kimura made the massive bid on the tuna at Tokyo’s Toyosu fish market on Sunday.
The fish was sold in the first auction for tuna since New Year.
This is not the first time Kimura spent a lot of money on fish.
Last year, Kimura, who is the president of Kiyomura Corp, a Corp that operates the Sushi-Zanmai Restaurant Chain in Tokyo, spend the second-highest price on a fish.
Kimura paid 2.4 million pounds for a 278-kilogram tuna last year.
In an interview, Kimura explained his massive budget for fish.
Kimura said, “Yes, this is expensive, isn’t it? I want our customers to eat very tasty ones this year too.”
Kimura said he is happier than last year’s auction.
