58-Year-Old Alabama Man Who Served 36 Years In Prison For Stealing $50.75 From A Bakery Will Finally Walk Free
A 58-year-old Alabama man who served 36 years in prison for stealing $50.75 from a bakery will finally walk free after a judge sent re-sentenced him.
58-year-old Alvin Kennard was originally sentenced to life in prison without parole in 1983 for the first-degree robbery.
After spending 36 years in prison, Kennard was ordered to be released by a judge.
The unusual punishment of Alvin Kennard was due to the “Three Strikes Law” of Alabama which is often called as the Habitual Felony Offender Act.
Alvin was first charged with burglary and grand larceny, this made him eligible to be sentenced under the Three Strikes Law.
Moments after he was re-sentenced by the judge, Kennard said, “I’m sorry for what I did… I was wrong. I take responsibility for what I did in the past. I want the opportunity to get it right.”
The family of Alvin cheered inside the local court after the judge re-sentenced him.
Alvin Kennard spent 36 years at the William E. Donaldson Correctional Facility in Bessemer.
The freeman now wants to live with his family and work properly in carpentry.
When Kennard was 18, he was charged with burglary, grand larceny, and receiving stolen property after a break-in was reported at an abandoned service station.
So when Kennard was arrested again at the age of 22, he already had a brief criminal history.
Kennard pleaded guilty to the crimes he did in 1979 and was sentenced 3 years in probation.
He was then sentenced for robbing the bakery at knifepoint when he was 22, this made him guilty to three felony counts, and was sentenced to a mandatory life sentence without parole due to the Habitual Felony Offender Act.
During an interview with CBS42, Patricia Jones, the niece of Alvin Kennard, said that she visited her uncle for years when he was still in Jail.
During the interview, Patricia said, “It was a couple of years that he started talking about God and I knew he had changed. He wants to be forgiven for what he had done and he wants the opportunity to come back and learn how to survive.”
