Amazing Video Shows Sleeping Octopus Changing Its Color As It Dreams

Nature on PBS shared an amazing video that showed a sleeping octopus changing its colors while it was dreaming.

The video shows the octopus changing its light color into the dark while it was sleeping in a tank.

The clip is going to be aired on Octopus: Making Contact, a documentary.

David Scheel, a Marine Biologist from the Alaska Pacific University, was observing Heidi, the octopus, when it changed its colors.

The video shows Heidi sleeping upside-down in the tank.

After some time, Heidi changes its color while it was sleeping.

Shceel believes Heidi was dreaming when it changed colors.

David explained, “If she is dreaming, this is a dramatic moment. You could almost narrate the body changes and narrate the dream. She sees a crab and her color starts to change a little bit, then she turns all dark, octopuses will do that when they leave the bottom. This is camouflage, like she’s just subdued a crab and she’s just going to sit there and eat it, and she doesn’t want anyone to notice her.”

David added, “It’s a very unusual behavior to see the color come and go on her mantle like that, just to be able to see all the different color patterns flashing one after the other, you don’t normally see that when an animal’s sleeping. This really is fascinating.”

A user who saw the video said, “The camouflage is so effective that the camera thinks it has to refocus at 1:13. One of the most fascinating animals on the planet.”

Another user said, “For a moment there I felt so… connected… to the octopus… Does anyone get similiar feeling?”

A third user said, “Just remember this is a creature that comes from our planet, not on some alien world. Imagine what could be out there if these things can change the color and texture of their skin right here on Earth.”

This video just shows how amazing marine animals are.
