The picture that won an award for competition shows the mouth of a whale shark filled with shoal fish.

Evans Baudin, a daredevil photographer, was the one that took the very rare images of the whale shark and the food that it was eating.

The huge whale shark had a number of a shoal of remora fishes inside its massive mouth.

Baudin, who is from France, saw the creature off the coast of Baja California Sur, Mexico, on June 5, 2020.

He runs a diving company in Mexico.

The picture that he took won gold in the annual photography picture for the Scuba Diving Magazine.

32-year-old Baudin submitted the image to the Through Your Lens reader photo contest.

He said that he got to capture the incident on a private dive during the coronavirus lockdown in the country.

He had been documenting the effects of reduced boat traffic during the lockdown when he took the picture.

Baudin, a marine wildlife expert, said that the huge female whale shark swam towards him and was friendlier than they usually are.

Recalling the moment, he said:

After two hours in the water with a school of silky sharks near the surface, our boat captain yelled: ‘Whale shark, right behind you.’ There was a 12m-plus female. The surprise was twofold when I discovered about 50 remoras peacefully enjoying a free ride in her mouth.

Baudin claims that marine wildlife became friendlier during the coronavirus lockdown.

He believes that boat traffic and lack of activity are the ones that made the wildlife friendlier.

Baudin managed to take images of the world’s largest fish before it swam away moments after that was taken.

He added:

It was the first time I have ever seen this. I’ve seen dozens and dozens of whale sharks around the world before, with remoras going in and out of their mouths. But I have never seen so many remoras literally sleeping inside and enjoying a free ride. The shark stayed around the boat for an hour and her behaviour was completely normal. She never seemed to be bothered by what seemed to me to be a very uncomfortable situation.
