Caring Dog Adopts 7 Baby Opossums After Their Parents Died In Forest Fires

A caring dog adopted 7 baby opossums after their parents passed away in forest fires that happened in Brazil this year.

The animals were reportedly rescued from a forest fire and were left orphaned, so the dog did something any human would do.

Talita Peixoto, a biology student, was given a litter of newborn marsupials so she could take care of them until they get matured enough to be released back into the wild.

The student said that the joeys were saved by Samuel Maria, her friend, over a month ago.

The animals were rescued in forest fires that happened in the municipality of Monte Alto in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Little did they know that a dog would end up becoming their mother after the tragic happening.

Images and footage that are viral on the internet right now show the animals getting along with Jojo, the dog of Talita.

The animals cling to the back of the dog just like their mother.

Jojo cleans the animals as she gently wraps them around her and gives them some licks.

Talking about the love, Talita said:

One day the little opossums seemed sad and dispirited because they were missing their mother, and my dog, Jojo Toddynho, laid down in front of me as I was feeding them. One of the little opossums went up to her and clung onto her. Seeing that situation, I thought: ‘I’ll put the others on top of her because they must be missing their mother’. When I placed them onto her, it was incredible because they grabbed onto her and she completely accepted them. It was so beautiful to see.

However, the bond had to be stopped due to some cruel facts.

Experts ended up warning her that marsupials in urban areas are mostly killed after being attacked by dogs.

Since that warning, Talita has stopped placing the joeys together with her pooch.

Talita said:

I stopped the contact between them and my dog because they have to be afraid of people, dogs and other animals. If not, they could end up like their mothers – killed by dogs.

The Joeys have been released back into the wild.

They were placed back in their natural habitat after they reached the appropriate size and weight and after learning to find food, water, and shelter without any help.
